Contact the Teachers Registration Board of the Northern Territory on 1800 110 302 or email trb@nt.gov.au to see if you are eligible to register as a teacher 

You will need to complete a minimum one year teaching or education postgraduate program.

Choose what course you want to study (i.e early childhood, primary, secondary). A list of nationally approved teacher education programs are available on the Australian Institute for Teaching and School Leadership website.

 

I don't have a university degree 

I have completed Year 12  I have not completed Year 12 
You will need to complete either a four year undergraduate teaching or education degree OR a combined four years of study (three year undergraduate degree plus a minimum one year postgraduate teaching or education qualification). Contact SATAC (or equivalent) to find out about alternative university entry pathways

Tips and advice

School students

  • Know what qualifications you need to become a teacher in the Northern Territory (NT)
  • Consider the type of teaching that you think you would be interested in i.e. early childhood, primary or secondary teaching
  • There are certain subjects you should consider studying in Years 11 and 12 if you intend to study teaching after graduating high school. Speak to your Careers Advisor to learn more
  • See if you are eligible for any department NT government scholarships. 

Assistant Teachers

Assistant teachers are remote Aboriginal employees who work as part of a teaching team with a qualified classroom teacher.

Assistant teacher levels range from no formal education qualification (Level 1) to paraprofessional education worker with Advanced Diploma in Education or equivalent (Level 5) qualification. Assistant teachers who want to become a qualified teacher are able to transition to a teaching degree once they have obtained Level 5 qualification.
